He was especially interested in the lyrics of Queen Latifah. He began writing poetry when he was nine years old after listening to the rhyme and rhythm of rap music. Reynolds was born on December 6, 1983, in Washington, D.C., but grew up across the border in Oxon Hill, Maryland. In 2020 Reynolds was named the Library of Congress’s National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature.
His books won multiple awards, and some were named finalists (runners-up) for the Coretta Scott King Award, the National Book Award, and the Newbery Medal. His work combined gritty scenes-including instances of violence and bullying-with a touch of humor. American author Jason Reynolds wrote books for young adults.
